The thing about the Gillard speech

The thing about the Gillard speech is that it is honest. 

Julia Gillard isn’t a great public speaker. Sure, she’s good, and she’s an excellent politician but she isn’t great at public speaking. 

Kevin Rudd - is an excellent speaker. Barack Obama will probably go down in history as one of the greatest public speakers. But J.Gill just isn’t. 

What today’s speech had that all her others have lacked, was real conviction. Honesty. Feeling. Today she spoke from the heart and it was that sincerity that made the 15 minutes she spoke for feel like so much less. I was transfixed from the moment she took the floor and spontaneously applauded at the end, became emotional as she spoke and reacted in a way I have never reacted to any political speech before because it resonated with me, as it has done with so many Australians. 

I wish that I could say with any kind of confidence that is a new era for Gillard and her politics, but in all honesty it probably isn’t.

Julia Gillard proved to Australia today just the kind of Prime Minister that she could be, but party politics and the need to please the majority must temper that all of most of the time. By next week she will be falling out of favour again (although this might just give her the push she needs to make it through the next election), and her raw, moving speech will be buried underneath so much bureaucracy.

She will be remembered for it and it will be brought up from time to time but unless she finds that conviction that now seems so gapingly absent from her other speeches, she will never capture the nation in the same way as she did today.
